Mineral Name: Sapphire (Corundum var. Sapphire.). Blue toned hexagonal crystal.

Locality: Kitui District, Eastern Province, Kenya.

Dimensions: 0.31" x 0.38" (8mm x 10mm)

Characteristics of this specimen: This is a hexagonal cross section of a blue sapphire crystal--this type of crystal is a solid blue, without transparency. Sapphires are any variety of corundum except red--they vary in color, and may range from colorless to yellow to pink to blue, with the rarest color being padparadscha (from the Sanskrit word for lotus blossom).

Care Notes: Corundum is a very hard and durable stone, second only to diamond.
