Mineral Name: Sapphire (Corundum var. Sapphire.). Blue toned crystal.
Locality: Ratnapura, Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.
Dimensions: 0.42" x 0.15" (11mm x 4mm)
Characteristics of this specimen: This is a bipyramidal sapphire crystal, from Sri Lanka's most famous "gem town", Ratnapura. Gems such as tourmaline, zircon, chrysoberyl, rubies and sapphires, in Sri Lanka are usually found in alluvial secondary deposits, in gem-bearing river gravels--these gravels are mined fromfarmland and rice paddies which, at one time, were ancient flood plains and streams. The sapphires from this region vary in color, and may range from colorless to yellow to pink to blue, with the rarest color being padparadscha (from the Sanskrit word for lotus blossom).
Care Notes: Corundum is a very hard and durable stone, second only to diamond.
