Mineral Name: Ruby (Corundum var. Ruby)
Locality: John Saul Mine (Rockland Mine), Tsavo West, Taita-Taveta County, Kenya.
Dimensions: 0.92" x 0.54" (24mm x 14mm)
Characteristics of this specimen: Ruby is the red variety of corundum--all other corundum varieties are technically sapphires. One of the most common crystal habits for corundum is bipyramidal (scalenohedral--terminations on each end). This crystal is rough and solid, with a deep pink-red shade and red fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Points are in varying levels of perfection. Though it is not faceable, this solid rough ruby is a unique specimen from a less common locality.
