Mineral Name: Ruby (Corundum var. Ruby)
Locality: Karur, Kangayam, India.
Dimensions: 0.88" x 0.42" (23mm x 11mm)
Characteristics of this specimen: Ruby is the red variety of corundum--all other corundum varieties are technically sapphire. This crystal is rough and solid, with a deep pink-red shade and red fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Points may be bipyramidal, and are in varying levels of perfection when present. Though it is not faceable, this solid rough ruby is a unique specimen from a less common locality.
