Mineral Name: Tsavorite Garnet (Garnet, Grossular var. Tsavorite).
Locality: Merelani Hills, Manyara Region, Tanzania.
Dimensions: 0.31" x 0.42" (8mm x 11mm)
Characteristics of this specimen: A light citrus green color, with black inclusions (probably graphite), clean lines and apparent geometric shape. Small and lustrous, well formed.
Tsavorite garnets are a rare type of grossular garnet which gets their vibrant green color from chromium or vanadium—they are part of the garnet group. Garnet varieties include almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, uvarovite, and andradite. Garnets form in the cubic, or isometric, system--they form geometric shapes.
Care Notes: Garnets display a range of chemical properties, and hardness varies between 6.5-7.5. They are relatively hard and resistant to breakage.
