This specimen is a beautiful example of crystal structure! This is a large and sculptural cluster which features lovely crystals of iridescent blue chalcopyrite, growing off of a sparkling quartz-rich matrix, accented by mini dolomite crystals. It is a specimen from the Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend, Missouri. The tiny chalcopyrite crystals stand out against the matrix, with deeply shaded colors, and the sparkling matrix is a pale grey-white. The tiny white rhombic crystals are dolomite, another commonly associated mineral. The unusual cluster has a cool shape, and possesses several beautiful display angles. This is a highly collectible specimen with a unique and striking combination of minerals--it would offer a lot of beauty to any specimen collection.

Sweetwater Mine is part of the extensive Viburnum Trend, a large zone discovered in the 1950s and 1960s which is dominated by Pb-Ag-Zn deposits. Viburnum Trend is dominated by metallic sulfides, carbonates, and associated minerals, and spans across several of the most famous metallic mines in the United States.

————————-

Chalcopyrite is closely related to Iron Pyrite, with the addition of copper—this gives it a brassy yellow hue, and it also forms in a different crystal system from Pyrite, so it forms tetragonal crystal shapes instead of cubic crystals.

Healing: Chalcopyrite is associated with good luck and the finding of lost objects.
